Rest in Peace, Decatur Social Club [2004-2008]

there’s still a part of me that doesn’t quite believe or grasp that i can never go to dsc again. some of my favorite moments in my post-college atlanta life were at dsc with many of my best friends. the first thing i’d do with out-of-town friends was go to dsc. i used to describe my fridays as three days: day 1 was when i’d work from 9-5; day 2 was dinner & hanging out with friends from 5-12; day 3 would be dsc from 12-4 and then breakfast or whatever from 4-6ish. how my body somehow got used to being awake for 21 hours or so every friday i’ll never know.

it was at dsc where i got my education in the indie and dance scenes. everything from clap your hands say yeah to hot chip to mia to ti to 36mafia to wahtever else in between. i learned to dance at mjq, but dsc was what i fell in love with. the best part was the sheer joy that people exhibited when dancing and singing aloud, on the floors, on the benches, on the speakers, wherever. kenny. rob. preston. sonny. biluxi. warren. dylan. black sunshine. i never really knew these guys, but they were inevitably at dsc come friday nite, rockin it out till the sun comes up.

when a loved one passes on, one likes to sit around with other close friends and family and remember the good times. one of my favorite highlights was opening nite of ‘snakes on a plane’ when preston laid out the uber-awesome yet so awfully poppy title track by cobra starship. with plastic snakes on our fingers, my friends & i hissed at each other and sang at the top of our lungs. whenever our beloved local band snowden came on via le castle vania’s cover of ‘black eyes’, you could count on the dancefloor being packed and everyone jumping up and down and up and down, loving every minute. when 3:45am rolled around and the bartenders had thrown the lights on, much to our dismay, the dj would spin some kryptonite, the floor would clear of the girls fearing for their lives, and the rest of us would turn azul into what some would call a hiphop mosh pit, as we attempted to stay vertical on the floor rather wet from hours of spilt beers.

i present to you a muxtape where you can explore the best of what i remember from those fantastic months/years at dsc. i’m sure i’ve left out great songs, but i’m limited to my memory and the 12-song limit of muxtape. i invite you to create your own muxtape and share it with us all.

saturday through thursday, azul was merely a good burrito joint. but on friday nites from midnite-4am, we turned that shit inside out.

Tova Rinah to record a new album

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

a special message from Tova Rinah:

Hello!

This is Tova Rinah. I am recording a new album. Many of you will remember when I played with the former members of the Way Home, how we pre-sold albums to raise the money for the very expensive studio costs. Well, the new Way Home line-up and myself are pre-selling albums again, but this time it is for a full-length album that is ready to go! It has a name, an order for the songs, many creative musical ideas waiting to come to life and a calendar date set from mid-May to mid-June with a very talented producer named Mike Odmark in Nashville. Last time, with the pre-selling and fund raising, we were able to put a pay-pal link with the information up on our MySpace account. Pay-Pal is not presently allowing for links on MySpace.
If any of you are interested in pre-buying an album to help raise funds for the record, all you have to do is go to www. paypal. com.
You do not need a pay-pal account to use it. You’d go to Send Money and type in my email address, tova.rinah@gmail.com. I am asking $15 for this upcoming full-length album. Also, if you choose to pre-buy an album, please include your email address and shipping address. This information is important, so I can get a copy of the album to you when they are pressed and packaged and ready to go!!! They should be ready by late Summer/early Fall. I appreciate any one who is inclined to support this musical endeavor. Did you know that a well-done full-length album from start to finish can cost the same as a down-payment on a home? Well, I have been able to save a good deal towards the record expenses but I am still in need of anyone who is willing to come along side and help make this album a reality by pre-buying.

Thank you very, very much!
Sincerely,
Tova

here’s one of my favorite tracks off her last album:
