Unity08

I’ve just returned from a talk on Unity08, a new political party of sorts that aims to exist for a single presidential race. Their basic purpose is to have a national primary in 2008 [as opposed to individual state primaries] that will be available to all registered voters of any party affiliation. Then, that candidate will be placed on every state’s general presidential election ballot in 2008. The ticket will consist of a vice president and president from different parties.

Essentially, they’re trying to create a coalition government from within the White House itself. By having a president nominated by a wider body of people and having a vice president from a different party, the hope is to initiate compromise and unity and reject the continued polarization of the United States of America.

The best thing they have going for Unity08 is that you have nothing to lose by participating in their primary. It’s just another way to get someone you want to be president nominated & on the ticket. You can then choose to vote for whichever ticket you want.

What do you think? You think this whole crazy thing might work? They have people with experience in the political machine, a decent amount of money so far, and plans to raise enough money to make it work…

It’s a different approach than alternative political parties, and in that light, it could work.

Thanks for posting about this. I hadn’t heard about it.
