revolution!
21st July, 2005The revolution will not be televised! It will take place on the internet, the beautiful worldwide leveler of all things. How else would one person and an internet site break news stories that huge media corporations with literally billions of dollars among them miss completely?
Enough of that for now…I’d like to discuss the future of music and its relation to Myspace.com. At first, I thought it’d be just another social networking site, much like Friendster or Facebook. Then I realized some of my favorite musicians had accounts on Myspace. I requested them as my friends, and they accepted. I thought that was all well and good until I started getting friend requests from other musicians that I was not familiar with. I could have easily just rejected them right off the bat…but once I clicked on their names, I realized among their ‘friends’ were some of the very musicians who I do enjoy. Also, upon visiting their Myspace page, music automatically starts playing. You instantly realize that even though you have never heard of them, they are not bad at all…they might even turn out to be good.
I envision a future where a musician can visit the ‘friends’ of a musician that he/she is influenced by, and requesting those folks to be their friends. At the very least, it provides an opportunity for these musicians that they never had before — to be heard by seemingly unattainable ears.
Fuck “social networking” — enter the era of music networking
And why stop there? Why can’t Myspace support all artists of all mediums? They could host galleries, novels, poetry, film, …the possiblities are endless.
